Meet the Artist: Comic Controllers

by Tawny

Custom controllers come in all sorts of designs, we’ve seen them all over the internet. But Alex at Comic Controllers does a particularly amazing job giving them color and bringing them to life.

Comic Controllers is an Etsy store based in Oviedo, Florida. Alex Blake, the owner of the store, both designs and paints his controllers. He has been building custom controllers since 2013.

When asked about the creative process behind the controllers, Alex replied “As a long time Nintendo fan, I bring inspiration from my own personal history with Nintendo and their games to create controllers that I know I would love, and so hope other Nintendo fans would as well. All of our Joy-Cons are custom painted with professional paints.”

Comic Controllers sells custom controllers inspired by everything from Nintendo series, to consoles, to comic book characters. To name a few, he builds Joy-Cons that don Mew and Mewtwo from the Pokémon series, Pro Controllers featuring classic Super Mario Bros. characters, and controllers inspired by consoles like the Nintendo GameCube. But his favorite item in his store is a pair of Pikachu Joy-Cons, as Pikachu holds an “incredibly special place in his heart.” We can’t blame him, Pikachu is iconic, and so are his controllers.

Alex has over 15 original designs for his Nintendo controllers, but every day he gets requests for new designs as custom orders. This allows customers to commission him in return for an even more original controller that he might not have available in his store. I also asked him if he had any future plans for more Nintendo-inspired controllers, to which he replied with “I have a list a mile long that I keep in my phone of all ideas that I’m working my way through, slowly but surely!”

Aside from Nintendo merchandise, Alex also sells controllers for the XBOX One, XBOX 360, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation 4 consoles. And aside from controllers, he even sells Splatoon-inspired clothing for cosplayers and fans like the Takoroka Mesh hat and SquidForce t-shirt. So, if you’re a big Splatoon fan, Alex has you covered in both the controller and clothing department.

It was an absolute pleasure getting to know Alex and learning about his awesome controllers, but here are some special words from Alex himself: “Thank you to every supporter, old and new! I really appreciate all of your support and truly can’t thank you enough! I hope my efforts will eventually turn me into a Nintendo Brand Ambassador one day!” Feel free to check out more of his controllers and other merchandise at Comic Controllers.

What are your thoughts on Alex’s creative custom controllers? Which one is your favorite? Feel free to share in the comment section below.
