The Pokémon Company released Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet’s second trailer, featuring everything from new Pokémon to gameplay footage. This 9th generation of games will release on November 18 exclusively on the Nintendo Switch. Scarlet and Violet are the first open-world RPGs to join the main series. While they won’t be in our hands for another five months, there’s a lot to learn from the latest trailer. Let’s take a closer look at what’s to come in Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet.
Co-Op Gameplay
According to the official Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet website, fans can expect “multiplayer gameplay with up to four players” and “explore various locations of the region in these games.” Fans had multiplayer experiences in Sword and Shield as they fought Gigantamax Pokémon together, and they have long been able to trade and battle. However, co-op exploration is the latest multiplayer experience in the series.
New Professors and Rival
Aside from your playable character, the trailer gave us a look at Scarlet and Violet’s rival and respective professors. Pokémon Scarlet players will encounter Professor Sada, while Pokémon Violet players will encounter Professor Turo. As stated by The Pokémon Company, professors are conducting their own research “into certain lore passed down in the region.” Turo’s outfit is futuristic in style compared to Sada’s primitive look. Perhaps this gives us an idea of what they’re researching.
The “rival” character is known as Nemona. According to The Pokémon Company, she has “undisputed skill in battle—though it does also seem that she’s not the best at throwing Poke Balls.” As a powerful Pokémon trainer, her experience makes her a reliable guide for players’ adventures through the region.
Legendary Pokémon
In addition to new gameplay and characters, the trailer revealed each of the game’s signature legendary Pokémon: Koraidon and Miraidon. Koraidon is the legendary Pokémon you can meet in Pokémon Scarlet, and Miraidon is the legendary Pokémon you can meet in Pokémon Violet. As reported by The Pokémon Company, their powers “far surpass those of other Pokémon,” but further information on them is unknown. Koraidon’s more organic features contrast Miraidon’s technological and electrical ones, alluding to a past vs. future or nature vs. technology theme for Scarlet and Violet’s stories.
Brand New Pokémon
As expected, unseen Pokémon can be discovered in Scarlet and Violet. Three new Pokémon have joined the ever-growing Pokédex: Pawmi, Lechonk, and Smoliv. Pawmi is an electric mouse that generates electricity by rubbing its cheeks (who does that sound like?), then discharging it through its paws. Lechonk is probably the best Pokémon to exist, but it’s a normal-type hog that uses its sense of smell to search for berries. Smoliv is a grass/normal type that stores oil made from nutrients it gathers through photosynthesis – all in the fruit on its head.
Pre-Orders & Dual Pack
Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet are now available for pre-order at the Nintendo Store. Both games cost $59.99 and will release on November 18 for the Nintendo Switch. A dual-pack steelbook edition that includes both games will be available to pre-order at a later date. This double pack can be purchased at the Pokémon Center website and participating video game retailers.
