New Super Smash Bros. Game Includes Every Fighter in the Series

by Tawny

Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo Switch is finally here!

Revealed during the E3 2018 Nintendo Direct presentation, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the latest and most expansive Super Smash Bros. title. It will include every Super Smash Bros. fighter in the series; yes, the game will feature every playable character up-to-date.

Characters like Snake, a fan-favorite, and Wolf, Young Link, Pichu, and Pokémon Trainer will be returning to the roster, as well as DLC characters from the previous Super Smash Bros. game for the Wii U. This gives players a roster with more than 60 characters to choose from. But according to the presentation, players will have to unlock most of the characters. How these characters will be unlocked has not been confirmed, but hopefully, we can see some separate game modes or a story mode similar to Subspace Emissary from Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

Additionally, the Inkling from the Splatoon series will be a new, playable character, as well as Ridley from the Metroid series. (No, this is not a joke. We will be covering this in a separate article.) Some returning characters have also been redesigned to match recent games in their series. For example, Link dons his tunic from Breath of the Wild, Zelda’s design was inspired by her look from A Link Between Worlds, and though it isn’t featured in his physical design, Cappy will join Mario in his moveset.

The presentation also discussed “echo characters,” or playable characters referred to as clones in the Super Smash Bros. community. Echo characters are characters whose movesets and designs were inspired by already-existing fighters, like Lucina to Marth or Dark Pit to Pit. Epsilon (ɛ) symbols will sit next to the names of these fighters to officially categorize them as echo characters. With this news, Princess Daisy will be coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as Princess Peach’s echo fighter, so she will officially be a playable character.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is still in development, so we have yet to see all of the game’s content. Its current release date is set for December 7th, 2018. You can check out more details in the Nintendo Direct video below.
