Super Mario Maker 2’s “Legendary Update”

by Maverick Dagwood

Super Mario Maker 2 for the Nintendo Switch is receiving a free update on December 5th, adding many new features to the game worthy of the version number 2.0.0. A litany of add-ons are appearing, among which feature Link from the Legend of Zelda series as a playable character to transform into. He will be featured along with his iconic Master Sword and a new set of attacks, including bombs and arrows, and his shield, all wrapped in the 8-bit Super Mario Brothers style. The new arrow and bomb attacks can be used to reach and break through places Mario typically can’t, and the shield can be used to block otherwise deadly attacks.

There are also new items and stage hazards coming to the update. Dash Blocks, colored in the Mario 3D world style give Mario a boost when activated, the Frozen Coin are coins trapped in ice that can only be released through some sort of heat, such as a fireball, the iconic P Block, revealing hidden stage platforms, the Spike enemy, a green turtle-like creature that spits out spike balls and in snowy areas, snowballs, and the Pokey, a cactus creature that falls down a peg with each bit of damage inflicted, who’s height can even be determined by the player.

Finally, there is also the new “Ninji Speedruns” mode. The mode will feature speedrunning tracks created by Nintendo themselves! When playing these levels, ghosts of other runners will appear as the player dashes through the timed course, and they will be matched with your skill level, making it more rewarding to constantly beat ghosts as you shave seconds or milliseconds off of each record. There will be leaderboards alongside each near-weekly event update, with new courses being issued periodically. Players can earn stamps by clearing these courses to buy in-game rewards, granting players special Mii costumes.
