Super Smash Bros Ultimate: What’s New?

by Faren Elle

Super Smash Bros Ultimate was just announced on Nintendo Direct E3 2018. It was their largest segment of the presentation and here we’ll cover the changes they made in battle techniques, final smash abilities, Amiibo utilization, and more. Get ready for the biggest crossover title in gaming history!

New Battle Techniques

They have improved the Directional Air Dodge by increasing the distance you travel while dodging. This improvement makes it easier to recover from falls whether you’re thrown off the map or are knocked straight up in the air. One hinderance is if you over-dodge in battle, even on the ground, it will slow down your recovery time leaving you more vulnerable to attacks.

You are now able to perform a Short Hop Attack at any time. Simply jump and press the A button simultaneously and you’ll deal out a quick aerial blow to oncoming fighters.

Every character had a shield ability before and all could execute a perfect shield when the shield button was released but now they’ve increased the difficulty. The Perfect Shield now requires you to time it more carefully for it to land. If you miss the timing then you’ll take that damage.

Some minor additions to the battle techniques are: holding down certain attacks to enact rapid strikes, performing a smash attack will cancel your own dash, and you can now engage in combat while climbing ladders with ladder attacks.

1-on-1 Damage

In 1-on-1 battles, the damage dealt in attacks is increased. This change should help with the fluidity and pacing of 1-on-1 combat and keep the players on their toes.

See Who’s Ahead

In timed battles, the player who is in the lead will sometimes flash with light during the battle. This will keep the players aware of the player rankings without having to look away from the fight.

Final Smash

The Final Smash ball is joining the fight and is better than ever! Every character’s Final Smash Attack has been updated to be quicker and to the point providing an easier transition when falling back into the fray of battle. That’s not all! There is also a fake smash ball that’ll appear on stage that looks slightly different than the real thing. If you strike the fake though you’ll be the one taking on a heavy blow.

Other Things You Might Have Missed

During Nintendo’s Tree House Live Stream they revealed that they have switched the player-selection and stage-selection order. Now you have to pick the stage you’ll battle on before players select their characters. This could greatly affect competition strategies since you can now see the destination beforehand. You can choose a character more suited to an arena if you happen to be competing on a stage set to Battlefield Form.

Nintendo has also announced that GameCube controllers will also be compatible with the title! They have been listening to the fans desires and they have delivered.

Super Smash Bros Amiibos and their counterparts from other titles are completely compatible and can be utilized for adding a Figure Player that can level-up. Figure Player data from previous Smash Bros titles can be transferred over as well.

There are more Assist Trophies than ever before and now you can take them on in a fair fight! KO assist trophies with style and earn points for doing so! Certain assist trophies will remain unbeatable such as the Nintendogs trophy.

Certain characters with additional gauges for special attacks will have them appear above their character icon similar to their health gauge and will remain their throughout the entirety of the battle. For example, Cloud’s Limit Gauge and Robin’s Levin Sword Gauge and Tome Gauge will always appear by their icon at the bottom of the screen. Villager’s icon will also display the exact item they’ve pocketed incase you’ve forgotten.

Online Battling

In the Nintendo Direct Live Stream, they hinted at a possible online battle mode that will include Mii Fighters. They haven’t affirmed this but it was a question they posted in text at the bottom of the screen. Hopefully this is something we can look forward to in the future.

That’s everything you need to know to fight confidently in the next Super Smash Bros: Ultimate. Thanks for reading.
