Metroid: Dread Announced for the Nintendo Switch

by Maverick Dagwood

After over a decade, Samus is getting back into her armor for an original adventure for the Nintendo Switch, releasing October 8, 2021!

Metroid: Dread is the fifth original 2D Metroid game in the series, and will be assisted in development by Mercury Steam, the team that created Metroid: Samus Returns in 2017 for the Nintendo 3DS (a remake of Metroid II: Return of Samus). The gameplay shown seems to mirror the remake with added mechanics, such as a parry melee and ranged counter, elements of stealth, and increased movement options mostly shown during Nintendo’s Treehouse event.

The game itself seems to be taking on a darker tone, much like its previous entry in the series, Metroid: The Other M, and will be bringing back the oppressive atmosphere featured in the Prime titles’ cramped space station environments. Samus will face a new threat, the E.M.M.I., a mechanical threat of hostiles who are seemingly impervious to her initial attacks. Run, hide, and blast your way through a new chapter of Samus’ story on October 8th, 2021, and look forward to the release of Amiibo figures featuring Samus in her new attire and an E.M.M.I. for added in-game bonuses.

Upcoming Amiibo of Samus sporting her suit and the new threat E.M.M.I.

A collector’s edition has also been announced, featuring an art book, five art cards, a steelbook, and one sleek case to keep it all in.

Everything included in the Metroid: Dread Special Edition.

Join Samus in her new adventure soon, and take a look at the development history too, while you’re at it.
