The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Sequel Revealed

by Garrett Boyle

Nintendo teased the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild with a short trailer at the end of the Nintendo Direct E3 2019 presentation. It is made clear that this game will be a direct sequel to Breath of the Wild. Although the trailer was only a little over a minute, there are some significant details to glean from it.

The teaser opens with an ethereal green light swirling around some underground ruins, with a mummy at the center of it all. There is a disembodied, glowing arm clutching at its chest, which seems to be the cause of the green light. The dark energy known as Malice is emanating from the corpse. The mummy seems to be a male Gerudo, evidenced by its red hair and the Gerudo Symbols displayed on both the jewelry and clothing that it wears. A reasonable assumption that this mummy is Ganondorf, who is the source of Malice.

The ethereal light flows from a mysterious hand.

Moments later, Link and Zelda are exploring what are likely the same ruins. These characters are of course the same Champion and Princess that we know from Breath of the Wild. Zelda is sporting a bob cut and wearing a new cape. She is briefly seen riding a large, horned beast. Link is wearing his Champion’s Tunic and still wielding the Master Sword, but he is dressed a little more heavily for this expedition.

The ruins appear large, but there is no telling how much of them can be explored in the game.

Torchlight shows that the walls of the passageways are covered in glyphs. An underground stream flows through the ruins luminescent crystals color the area. The scope and style of architecture of the ruins are best highlighted in a moment when Link and Zelda are crossing a timeworn bridge in an open cave system. The structures do not resemble the Sheikah designs that were so common in Breath of the Wild.

The earrings of the mummy clearly show the Gerudo symbol.

Link and Zelda eventually happen upon the Gerudo Mummy. What follows is a montage of quick shots. Several details can be picked from these moments. Link and Zelda seem to get separated. Link’s right hand is engulfed by the green light and shines the same color as the arm that was grasping the Gerudo corpse. There is also a scene in which the arm seems to be pulling Link up from a fall. At the end of these clips, the mummy awakens, with glowing red eyes. The last moment we see is of Hyrule Castle, rising out of the ground. This possibly indicates that the ruins were deep below the castle itself.

Perhaps Link will have a new power this time around.

Unfortunately, there is no word on a release date, but maybe that is for the best as new Zelda titles tend to get delayed. Until we hear from the developers themselves, all we can is speculate about Breath of the Wild 2.
