New Pokémon, Gym Leaders, and “Gigantamaxing” Mechanic Revealed for Pokémon Sword and Shield

by Tawny

The Official Pokémon YouTube channel recently released a video with a “Galar Research Update” on upcoming Pokémon, characters, and a new battle mechanic in Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield.

The video introduced four new Pokémon, with one of them being Yamper, the electric-type Corgi Pokémon revealed at E3. We also get a look at Alcremie, a fairy-type, Rolycoly, a rock-type, and Duraludon, a steel and dragon-type.

Aside from brand new Pokémon, the video also revealed a new battle mechanic called Gigantamaxing. Basically, Gigantamaxing changes a Pokémon’s size and appearance. Similar to Dynamaxing, it also gives your Pokémon a power boost. However, not all Pokémon can Gigantamax – Gigantamaxing is a rare phenomenon that allows eligible Pokémon to use G-Max Moves. G-Max Moves are special to Gigantamax Pokémon and cannot be used by normal Dynamax Pokémon.

You can catch Gigantamax Pokémon by participating in Max Raid Battles, but since they’re rare, obtaining one won’t be easy.

The video also revealed new characters and gym leaders in the Galar Region. In Sword version, players will fight against the fighting-type gym leader Bea. But in Shield version, players will fight the ghost-type gym leader Allister instead. The gym leaders of certain towns will change depending on the game you play.

Additionally, we get a look at Chairman Rose and Oleana. Rose is the chairman of the Galar Pokémon League and the president of a large company. He’s the man that made the Galar Pokémon League famous by including Dynamax Pokémon. His secretary, Oleana, serves as the vice president of Rose’s business conglomerate. She’s primarily in charge of running the company.
