The February 17th Nintendo Direct ended on an exciting note with the announcement of Splatoon 3, the third in the Splatoon franchise. The game is slated to come out in 2022.

The trailer opens on a desert wasteland environment, where we meet a new inkling with a Salmonid Smallfry companion. As with the other games, the player character’s skin and eye color can be customized. The customization screen highlighted that players can choose inkling or octoling from the start as well as several new options for hairstyles and eye colors.

The new hub area is a place called Splatsville, a “city of chaos,” as expected from team Chaos winning the Final Splatfest in Splatoon 2. The new location is said to be far from Inkopolis and is surrounded by a bright desert wasteland.

The yellow team players stand on spawn drones before they choose their spawn points on the map.

The gameplay trailer and Nintendo Twitter posts confirm that matches will have a choice of spawn points that a player can use during a match. In addition, there are more movement options. The first is a unique jump option that allows the player to quickly change direction, called a squid roll. The second is a rapid swimming climb with a leap at the top, called a squid surge.

Many weapon types from previous games will be returning, as well as a new bow weapon that can fire three shots simultaneously. The trailer implies a variety of new special and subweapons for players to use in the new game.
