Kirby Star Allies Review

by Faren Elle

Kirby Star Allies for the Nintendo Switch is a pleasant platformer, 3-D, adventure game where you must save the universe from a mysterious alien foe! This game is similar to Kirby’s Return to Dreamland from the Wii with its four player co-op mode but now you are able to play as Kirby’s enemies by friending them with Kirby’s new friend-heart ability. You can befriend any enemy you run into within the levels to help you on your adventure. To further the fun they allow you to imbue some of these enemies with a natural power such as fire, wind, ice, water, and electricity. The combinations are quite entertaining and add a lot of variety to help with the somewhat linear gameplay.

In this adventure the citizens of Dreamland have been infected with a dark power from the evil doers in Jambastion fortress but this evil force could not overtake Kirby and his pure heart. Instead Kirby obtains the ability to friend these hardened enemies and add them to his party. He must save King Dedede, Meta Knight, and more to free Planet Popstar, and its solar system, from the greatest evil he has ever faced.

This game functions well as a couch co-op for parties or just to pass the time with some friends. Playing the game on your own loses the magic and is the main appeal of this game. The levels are full of moments that require at least a second team member.

You are able to complete these events in single player mode simply by friending an enemy which will function as a computer ally but the fun of the game comes from working together. The wholesome and cute nature of this game is heart-warming and will be a wonderful addition to your Nintendo Switch library.

Don’t expect much of a challenge from this game though. It’s merely a game to play with others and to engage a group of people. Play this game to have a good time and try not to dedicate too much time in one sitting or you might find yourself beating the main adventure rather quickly.

In addition to the main adventure there are some fun mini-games to keep the party going!

Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go!‘ is a mode where you get to play as any of the Kirby enemies of your choice as you traverse through the main game levels as quickly as possible. You get to collect power-up hearts that will increase your teams attack, health, and speed.

Chop Champs‘ is a lively tree chopping competition. Be the fastest chopper and you could build a log house and bask in your glorious victory!

The Ultimate Choice‘ is where you face off with every boss from adventure mode one after the other. You can take them on alone or gather three friends to aid you in your quest. You can choose the “spiciness” of the difficulty level. (For example: Sweet Breeze, the easiest level, or Sizzling Threat, a 5 pepper level challenge, and everything in between!)

In ‘Star Slam Heroes‘ you need to save Dreamland from a dangerous meteor about to make contact. Grab your bat and hit that thing back into space! Time your hit accurately by filling your power gauge with the highest amount of power you can muster. Whoever slams that meteor into space the farthest is the winner!

In the newest update you can get five new friends added to your adventure! Welcome Rick & Kine & Coo from Kirby’s Dream Land 2! Don’t forget about Marx from Kirby Super Star! Also last but not least is Gooey from Kirby’s Dream Land 3!
